Over the past few months, I’ve worked with countless new students who are eager to learn how to build strength, flexibility, and confidence in their bodies. I’m so excited to share a list of my top 5 yoga recommendations for beginners—that can help you get started with an active and healthy lifestyle!

  1. Stretch and Flex

The more flexible you are, the stronger you will be. The more your muscles strengthen, the better posture you will have, the less likely you are to suffer from injury. Regular stretching exercises, in particular, help prevent injuries such as muscle strains and tendonitis. While you can do these stretches anywhere, it’s a good idea to stretch before and after exercising to prevent injury. In addition to making you feel good, stretching also makes you stronger, increases flexibility, and helps control pain.

  1. Breathe

Breathing is perhaps the most basic of yoga practices. It’s also one of the most challenging. Most people who have been practicing yoga for a while have had to come to grips with the fact that their breathing needs some improvement. And the truth is, you don’t need any fancy equipment to begin breathing better. Just start with simple breathing techniques. Slow, rhythmic breathing that alternates between inhaling and exhaling, and movement that stretches the body. They may seem intimidating at first but after you’ve practiced them for a while, you’ll find that your life changes for the better.

Beginners to yoga often have a hard time finding the proper posture. When standing or sitting, they have a difficult time achieving balance. Core muscles are important for maintaining a healthy back. If you’re having trouble maintaining balance, it could be because you are not using the core muscles properly. Proper posture means that your spine is straight. A straight spine gives you better balance, flexibility, strength, and endurance.

Once you’re warmed up, then you can start moving into poses.

A cool down is a series of poses that help you slow down your breath and focus on how you feel. After completing a challenging exercise, cool down pose helps the muscles and joints to relax and slow down the heart rate. You’ll notice a difference in the quality of your practice if you incorporate a cool down into your practice. Cool down with this 5 minute breathing exercise to help ease tension and relieve stress. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold it for 3 seconds and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat ten times.

In the end, all you need to do is just practice and practice and keep practicing. I have had to read so many different pieces of advice on this subject, it would have been easier for me to try and come up with a different piece of advice than actually give the right advice. That being said,I have come across several pieces of advice that I can whole-heartedly recommend. Here are a few of them:

1.Don’t get too attached to a style or method of yoga. Experimenting and mixing styles together can give you a unique look and help you to find your true voice in the practice.

2.Don’t be afraid to move. Move, especially in standing poses. When moving in standing poses, make sure that you are still balanced in your center. Don’t forget to breathe and remember to keep your neck long and relaxed.

3.Don’t forget to have fun with the practice. It’s OK to be silly sometimes. Remember, your body is here to do you no harm. So, you may as well enjoy the practice and allow yourself to laugh along with it.

4.Don’t worry about your alignment. Your body is telling you when something isn’t working. When something feels off, stop and take a break. Trust your body. Listen to what it is saying.

5.Don’t forget to eat! This will keep your energy up and help you feel stronger and more flexible. Eating regular, healthy meals helps keep your body aligned and functioning correctly. Eating is also the best way to detoxify your system.

6.Don’t forget to drink water. Water is always the best choice. Water will keep you hydrated and your body clean. It will keep your digestive system working and keep your muscles feeling fresh.
